During our previous architecture and design workshop we visited the impressive "Catedral Nueva" of Salamanca. Its construction lasted 2 centuries, between the 16th and the 18th and was built in two styles; late Gothic and Baroque.  The building began in 1513, was completed 1733 and was commissioned by Ferdinand V of Castile, Spain.  The sketching possibilities were infinite and the results great! The students' accomplishments are evident in the quality of their work. WELL DONE TO ALL!

During our previous Architecture and Design workshop we visited the famous Casa de Las Conchas, 'House of Shells'.  This beautiful building with its rich history was a great source of inspiration for the students.  From the building's exterior walls, which are covered by small, stone-sculpured shells, to the impressive courtyard space, the students had a multitude of architectural elements to sketch.  The building was originally the palace of Rodrigo Maldonado, who was a knight of the Santiago Order, and now houses Salamanca's public library which the students visited in their Lengua y Vida class.

During our previous Architecture & 3D design workshop, we went sketching to the beautiful church of San Juan de Sahagún en Salamanca.  Students began to investigate the various church thresholds and started looking at materiality and details.  One of the most important things they are beginning to comprehend is the idea of proportion and scale. They are learning the basic principles of design.

Students began their architectural sketching in the inspiring Plaza Mayor de Salamanca. Using their view finders and chosen materials they began to document visually what they found most interesting.  They investigated thresholds, building elevations, details and patterns, studying their form and light conditions.

In an intense three-week workshop in architectural design, through hands on study of Spanish architecture and culture, students will begin to understand the essence of space, form, function, and materiality and its immediate relationship to the landscape. As well as how our experience of space is determined by architecture and design.

The city of Salamanca provides the ultimate setting for an introduction to architectural design; it’s a place to be inspired and creative.   Students will learn from the city with its rich heritage and urban fabric (the Old City of Salamanca was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO) and important architectural buildings such as the cathedral of St. Esteban, the casa de las Conchas, the University of Salamanca, and the Plaza Mayor.

Students will be outdoors exploring the city, sketching, taking photos, mapping points of interest, looking at details, patterns, materials.  A variety of techniques and media will be learned in the process!
